When people see someone using a hands-free leash, the first thing they often say is, “My dog will drag me.” However, this concern is unfounded if you’re already adept at walking your dog with a traditional leash.

Addressing Dog Pulling with a Traditional Leash

If your dog is pulling you, even with a traditional leash, training is essential. However, it’s easier said than done. Most dogs learn through negative reinforcement. They pull and pull until you give in and relieve the pressure, teaching them that persistent pulling eventually leads to success.

Combating Dog Pulling

To counteract this behavior, stand still when your dog pulls. Resist the urge to release the tension as it’s a test of patience. Eventually, your dog will step back, ideally towards you, to relieve the pressure. This is the moment to reward them.

Interim Solution for Dog Pulling

This training method may take time, and some dogs may be particularly resistant. During the training process, consider using a no-pull harness, as discussed in another blog post. Attach our clip-on leash to the O-ring, clipping one end to the back of the harness and the other to the front. For taller individuals or smaller dogs, two leashes may be necessary. This setup forces the dog to turn whenever they pull too hard.
